Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped small
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, chopped (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup bread crumbs (regular, Italian-style, or panko)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Adobo seasoning
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices mozzarella or provolone (thick cut preferred)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease a loaf pan with cooking spray or olive oil.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms for 5-7 minutes until soft.
  3. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, sautéed veggies, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, Adobo, salt, and pepper. Avoid overmixing.
  4. Press half the meat mixture into the loaf pan.
  5. Layer 4 slices of cheese on top, leaving a small gap at the edges.
  6. Cover with the remaining meat mixture, pressing down firmly.
  7. Bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven, top with remaining 4 slices of cheese, and bake for another 10-15 minutes until cheese is melted.
  9. Let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
  10. Serve with mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, or on a toasted hoagie roll.

Notes

For a leaner version, substitute ground turkey. Leftovers taste even better the next day!
